Laxmikant Parsekar may lead BJP in Goa Assembly polls, hints Manohar Parrikar

PANAJI: Senior BJP leader and Union Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar hinted that Goa Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar will lead the party in the state elections due next year, while the latter today said it is for the party and the people to decide."Now it is the responsibility of Parsekar to get the party elected again," Parrikar said during a civic reception held last evening to celebrate the 60th birthday of Parsekar.

Legal fraternity divided over rechristening of High Court

After the Union Cabinet approved the Law Ministry’s proposal to rechristen the High Courts to the present name of the cities, there is a mixed reaction from the legal fraternity. While some welcomed it, others have expressed their disapproval.“What is the need to change the name of the court? I don’t understand the motivation behind the change,” said Sriram Panchu, senior advocate, Madras High Court. Changing the name will not just have an impact on the state or country but it has a worldwide impact. Worldwide everyone recognises the name of the court and now if we say that we are from the Chennai High Court, people are not going to have the same kind of respect, he added For A P Suryaprakasam, another advocate, “It is a recognition of the identity of Tamil people." For the first time, the central government had accepted our demand and we are happy about it, he said.

Aircel-Maxis deal: Karti Chidambaram gives ED investigation a miss

Karti Chidambaram, son of former Finance Minister P Chidamabram, failed to appear before Enforcement Directorate to join investigation on Tuesday in connection with money laundering investigation in the Aircel-Maxis deal of the 2G scam. “Karti informed the agency that he will be unable to come on Tuesday as he has other engagement and sought more time from the agency,” said a senior ED officer.Following which the agency has granted him fresh time to submit documents within the first fortnight of this month. “We are issuing a fresh a notice to Karti to present himself in person and submit personal financial documents and those related to a firm by July 15,” said the officer.
